LISTEN: Former guvs urge '08 focus on education

Former Iowa Govs. Tom Vilsack and Robert Ray joined organizers of the Strong American Schools "ED in 08" campaign Tuesday morning to kick off the group's national effort to make education a top priority in the 2008 presidential election.

"The road to the American dream that all of us want for you goes right through our school system," Vilsack said. "The road to the presidency goes right through your state. We are here today because those two roads intersect in '08. This is an important initiative to make sure education receives as much attention as many of the other issues being discussed in presidential politics today."

Ray also encouraged Iowans to understand their responsibility to bring this issue to light along the campaign trail.

"Iowans want to hear the essence of the candidates thinking on the issues," Ray said. "So today, this is a uniting call for candidates running for president, if you want our votes, then tell us how you will move to assure our kids succeed. We are challenging the candidates to lay out their ideas, and give us a plan for the public schools. Let's debate them, discuss them and let's go to work."
